Mama's Guilty Fool

"Oh, man! This is another good story. I was staying with my girlfriend at the Pontchartrain Hotel in New Orleans during Jazzfest. It was real late at night and we needed some ice for the ice bucket, so I went out into the hall to get the ice ... and there was my ex-wife, on the same floor, gettin' ice at the same ice machine. Neither one of us knew the other was going to be there, and the ink was barely dry on our divorce papers. I went back to the toom and wrote this song."

Mama preached against blasphemy and flying fast and high
While Daddy only smiled and winked his eye
Lies I've told and dreams I've sold
And hearts I've broke in two
They stole the soul of mama's guilty fool

Dark clouds running through my mind while I'm fast asleep
Baby says I walked and talked last night in dreams so deep
Sheets were wet and soaked in sweat, still I could not wake
And I scared my lover half to death, it was more than she could takeOh red wine and money so fine and all those empty tools
Heal the heart of mama's guilty fool

Cold chills running up her spine while I toss and turn
Baby thinks I've lost my mind watching me writhe and burn
Say a prayer, try not to sweat, so I will sparkle like a jewel
And heal the heart of mama's guilty fool
