If a country singer who plays most Thursday nights at Austin’s famed Broken Spoke dance hall was looking for a duet partner, he couldn’t do much better than a fellow Texan who idolizes Melba Montgomery, a woman who scored hit duets with George Jones and Gene Pitney. Dayton and Leigh even revive Somethin’ to Brag About, Montgomery’s 1970 single with Charlie Louvin. These two recall Jones and Tammy Wynette, and Johnny Cash and June Carter, and if most of their originals don’t quite measure up to Boudleaux and Felice Bryant’s Brand New Heartache, their twangy tales of domestic strife and roadhouse romance can at least, as the title suggests, hold their own.
